TCHC and Tridel are now offering scholarships for Atkinson Co-op residents and TCHC Alexandra Park tenants aged 17 years and older pursuing post-secondary studies, training and career advancement

The Alexandra Park Revitalization Scholarship consists of two unique streams in recognition of the diverse educational goals, career aspirations and learning preferences of Alexandra Park community members.

Stream A: Post-Secondary and Trade School Scholarship

  • Intended for community members with the goal of obtaining a post-secondary degree, a training, or academic certificate from a credible Canadian educational institute.
  • Scholarship award up to $5,000 to cover full-time tuition fees or up to $2,000 to cover part-time tuition fees for any program at a post-secondary institutes or training school (i.e. college, university, trade school).
  • Applicants are eligible for an additional bursary between $250 and $500 to cover expenses (text books, childcare, transportation etc.).

Stream B: Career Advancement and Continuing Education Scholarship

  • Intended for community members with the goal the goal of taking courses offered by private education institutes or post-secondary institutions’ continuing education programs; obtaining skills training and certifications; and accessing other career development opportunities to help build professional credentials and advance their careers.
  • Scholarship award up to $3,000 to help pay program fees at designated educational institutions or other organizations along with a bursary of up to $300 to cover expenses (text books, childcare, transportation etc.).

Virtual info sessions are being held on Tuesday April 11 from 12 - 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 - 8 p.m. and on Thursday April 27 6:30 - 8 p.m.

Drop-in sessions are being held at the Alexandra Park Community Centre on Friday April 21 from 3 - 8 p.m. and on Wednesday May 3 from 12 - 6 p.m.

When is the submission period?

The Alexandra Park Revitalization Scholarship will be available for application starting early April 2023 and the closing date for applications is June 2, 2023.

When is the application deadline?

The deadline for applications is Friday June 2, 2023 at 5pm.

Who can apply for the scholarship?

The Alexandra Park Revitalization Scholarship is open to Atkinson Co-op residents and Alexandra Park TCHC tenants aged 17 years and older!

What will the scholarship cover?

The Alexandra Park Revitalization consists of two unique streams. Scholarship awards will be paid directly to the post-secondary/training institution and bursaries will be paid to the recipient upon proof of enrollment. Programs may be full-time or part-time, in-person, online or hybrid.

Stream A: Post-Secondary and Trade School Scholarship

  • Intended for applicants with the goal of obtaining a post-secondary degree, a training, or academic certificate from a credible Canadian educational institute.
  • Scholarship award values of up to $5,000 are to cover full-time tuition fees for any program at a post-secondary institutes or training school (i.e. college, university, trade school) along with a $500 bursary to cover text books, childcare, transportation, etc. will also accompany these scholarship awards. NOTE: The course load required for full-time studies is 70% or more of a full course load.
  • A scholarship award value of up to $2,000 to help pay for part-time tuition fees for programs at postsecondary education institutes, or training schools (i.e. college, university, career academy and/or trade school) along with a $250 bursary to cover text books, childcare, transportation, etc. will also accompany scholarship awards. NOTE: The course load required for part-time studies is less than 70% of a full course load

Stream B: Career Advancement and Continuing Education

  • Intended for applicants with goal of taking courses at private education institutes (e.g. Toronto Film School, Marca College of Hair and Esthetics, Canadian Automotive and Trucking Institute); taking courses as part of continuing education programs offered by post-secondary institutions; obtaining skills training and certifications (e.g. First Aid, conflict resolution, driving school, security license, tech boot camps, computer literacy, PM certificate), and accessing other career development opportunities (e.g. language classes, tutoring, career counselling) to help build professional credentials and meet personal goals.
  • A scholarship award value of up to $3,000 to help pay for fees for programs at designated educational institutions or other organizations along with a bursary of up to $300 to cover expenses (text books, childcare, transportation, etc).

Filling out applications can be intimidating. Will there be any help for applicants in how to understand the application process?

TCHC is planning five sessions in April and May for applicants to learn how to fill out the application forms, what the application process involves, and how best to set yourself, as an applicant, up for a successful submission.

When will applicants be told the outcome of their scholarship application?

Applicants will be notified about the outcome of their application in early August 2023.

If I’m a successful scholarship winner, when and how will I get the funds?

Funds for the successful scholarship applicants will be made available in late August 2023. Once a student number or similar has been provided, the funds will be send directly to the student’s institution of choice, crediting their student account.

How will the applications be assessed?

Applicants will be scored using a point system that correlates to the specific mandatory components of the Stream A and Stream B applications. This is why a complete application form is very important! Applications will reviewed by an evaluation panel comprised of representatives of Alexandra Park-based organizations and service providers. Applicant names will be hidden throughout the evaluation process.

Will there be a celebration once the scholarships have been awarded?

A celebratory event will be planned to honour all the Alexandra Park Revitalization Scholarship recipients sometime in late September. Recipients will be invited along with their families and friends.
