Engagement on the Future Alexandra Park Community Centre

TCHC is developing a new community centre in Alexandra Park that will be almost 4x the size of the current APCC!

In 2012, the Atkinson Co-Op and TCHC initiated a revitalization of Alexandra Park that includes a full-scale redevelopment of all existing rental units, a new park, retail and social enterprise spaces, as well as the construction of a new community centre and an initial blueprint for the development was approved by the City Council in 2012. The new Alexandra Park Community Centre (APCC) forms part of Phase 2B of the revitalization.

In 2022, after a competitive bidding process, London UK-based Karakusevic Carson Architects (KCA), supported by Toronto-based ERA Architects and engagement firm Saffy, were selected to lead the design of the new community centre and Atkinson rental building in Phase 2B.

The design team has been working intensively with the APCC Steering Committee to build on the foundations of 2019’s APCC Vision Report and help identify which spaces should be accommodated within the new 2000m2 community centre. The design team has also organized several pop-ups to engage residents and build excitement within the broader community.

Where are we now with the project?

TCHC and the design team held a public meeting/community event day on May 13, 2023 to update the broader community on work to date and gain further insights on space prioritization. The event included fun interactive activities, a group walk to see where the future community centre will be, and refreshments provided by resident-led businesses.

Following the public meeting, the APCC Steering Committee finalized the spatial brief (which outlines the different spaces and estimated square footages) for the new community centre.

What's next?

As of July 2023, the project is in the Schematic Design phase in which the design team will focus on the concept design (e.g., layout, height and massing) of the building as well as high-level costing. The spatial brief will continue to develop throughout the design process.

Meetings with the Steering Committee will resume in the fall. Further details will be shared once available.
